When to Call a Plumber vs. DIY: A Guide for Piedmont and Williamston, SC Homeowners

Some plumbing problems you can handle with a wrench and a YouTube video. Others will cost you a lot more if you try to fix them yourself than if you’d just called a plumber in the first place. The trick is knowing which is which — and most people get it wrong in one direction or the other.

Here’s an honest breakdown of what’s safe to tackle on your own and what deserves a phone call to a licensed plumber in the Piedmont or Williamston, SC area.

Things You Can Probably Handle Yourself

A single slow drain. If one sink or one shower is draining slowly, it’s almost always a localized clog — hair, soap scum, or food debris in the P-trap. Remove the drain stopper, pull out what you can, and use a hand-crank drain snake (not chemical drain cleaner — more on that below). If that clears it, you’re good.

A running toilet. That constant hissing or running sound usually comes from a worn flapper valve inside the tank. Replacement flappers cost a few dollars at any hardware store and take about five minutes to swap out. If you pull the tank lid off and see a deteriorated rubber flapper that isn’t sealing flat against the drain seat, that’s your fix.

A dripping faucet. A single-handle faucet that drips from the spout usually has a worn cartridge or O-ring. With the water shut off under the sink, you can pull the cartridge and replace it. Just take the old one to the hardware store so you get the exact match. If you’re unsure, our toilets, faucets, sinks and more service page has details on the fixtures we handle most.

A clogged garbage disposal. If the disposal hums but doesn’t spin, it’s probably jammed. Turn it off, unplug it, and use the hex wrench (most disposals come with one) to manually rotate the impeller from underneath. Never put your hand inside the disposal.

Things That Need a Licensed Plumber

Multiple drains backing up at once. This is a main sewer line problem — not a DIY job under any circumstances. When two or more drains in different parts of the house are running slow or backing up simultaneously, the obstruction is in the main line that serves the whole house. This requires professional drain cleaning equipment and often a sewer camera inspection to find the root cause.

No hot water or inconsistent hot water. Whether you have a tank or tankless water heater, diagnosing and repairing water heater problems involves working with gas connections, electrical components, or both. A faulty thermocouple, a failing heating element, or a gas valve issue are all things that can create safety hazards if handled incorrectly. And if your water heater is more than 10 years old and acting up, it may make more financial sense to replace it rather than repair it — that’s a conversation worth having with a plumber before you spend money on parts.

Anything involving gas lines. This is the most non-negotiable item on the list. If you smell gas, if a gas appliance isn’t working properly, or if you need a gas line extended for a new appliance, do not attempt this yourself. Gas work requires specific licensing, pressure testing, and code compliance. A mistake here can cause an explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning. All gas line installation and repair should be performed by a licensed professional.

Water line leaks. If you see water pooling in the yard, notice a sudden drop in pressure throughout the house, or get an unexpectedly high water bill, you likely have a leak in your main water line. This requires professional leak detection equipment and excavation to repair. The longer you wait, the more water damage you’ll deal with — and the higher that water bill climbs.

Sewer line damage or replacement. If you’re dealing with sewage smells in the yard, persistent backups, or visible settling near the sewer line path, you need a sewer line repair or replacement — a job that involves excavation, proper slope grading, and code-compliant connections. Older homes in Piedmont and Williamston frequently have clay or cast iron sewer lines that have reached the end of their usable life.

Why You Should Stop Using Chemical Drain Cleaners

This is worth calling out specifically because so many people reach for Drano or Liquid Plumr as a first response. Chemical drain cleaners work by generating heat through a chemical reaction to dissolve clogs. The problem is they also corrode your pipes — especially older pipes made from cast iron or galvanized steel that are common in Piedmont and Williamston homes.

Repeated use weakens pipe walls, loosens joints, and can actually create leaks where there weren’t any before. If a drain snake doesn’t clear the clog, call a plumber rather than pouring chemicals down the drain. You’ll save money in the long run.

The South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation regulates plumbing licensure in the state, and for good reason — licensed plumbers carry the training, insurance, and accountability to protect your home. Jacob’s Plumbing LLC holds South Carolina License No. 44398, and we’re fully licensed for both plumbing and backflow work.

Jacob’s Plumbing was recommended to me by someone who recently had work done by Jacob’s Plumbing. They were pleased so I went with their suggestion to install a tankless water heater. Jacob and his team were extremely professional in every way! They showed up on time, worked efficiently and stuck to their original quote. I would highly recommend using this company!

Jacob's plumbing was recommended by another plumber. They were prompt, located the issue and fixed the sewer line that had been damaged. They snaked a camera through both ends of the sewer line to make sure no other section of the pipe was crushed. I felt the price was fair and they were very thorough. I will use them again.

Clear communication and quick service. Completely up front about cost. No run around at all. Kelsey came out and did a great job and gave options with price breakdowns as well. Price was also the best out of the few other quotes I received.
