Why Does My Bathtub Back Up When the Washing Machine Drains?

If water rises or gurgles in the bathtub while the washing machine pumps out, the washer’s discharge is meeting resistance somewhere after the laundry and tub drain paths join. The bathtub is often one of the lowest open fixtures, so it can become the visible relief point when the shared drain cannot carry the washer’s flow normally.
